GFCI Outlets: What Do They Actually Do?

GFCI outlets are one of the most important electrical safety features in your home—but many homeowners aren’t quite sure what they do or why they sometimes trip.

A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is designed to quickly shut off power when it detects an imbalance in the electrical current. This added protection is especially important in areas where electricity and water may come into contact.

Where Do You Need GFCI Protection?

Why Does My GFCI Outlet Keep Tripping?

A GFCI that trips occasionally may simply be doing its job. But if it keeps tripping, there may be an electrical condition that needs attention.

Common reasons include:

1. Moisture
Water or excessive moisture around an outlet, appliance, or outdoor connection can cause GFCI protection to trip.

2. A Faulty Appliance or Device
Sometimes the outlet isn’t the problem. A plugged-in appliance, tool, or other device may be causing the fault.

3. Too Many Devices on the Circuit
Depending on the circuit and what is connected to it, the electrical load may contribute to repeated tripping.

4. Wiring Problems
Loose, damaged, or deteriorating wiring can cause a GFCI to trip and should be evaluated by a qualified electrician.

5. A Worn or Faulty GFCI Device
GFCI devices don’t last forever. An older or malfunctioning device may fail to reset or begin tripping unexpectedly.

If your GFCI keeps tripping after you reset it, don’t keep forcing it back on—find out what’s causing the problem.

What Do the TEST and RESET Buttons Do?

Those two little buttons on a GFCI outlet are there for an important reason.

TEST Button
Pressing TEST simulates a ground fault. A properly functioning GFCI should immediately trip and shut off power to the outlet—and potentially other outlets it protects downstream.

RESET Button
After testing the GFCI, pressing RESET restores power if the device and circuit are operating properly.

What if it won’t reset?
A GFCI that won’t reset may indicate that power isn’t reaching the device, the GFCI has failed, or there is an electrical problem that is preventing it from safely restoring power.

Never repeatedly press RESET on a GFCI that continues to trip. The device may be warning you about a problem that needs attention.

How Often Should You Test Your GFCI Outlets?

GFCI protection only helps if it’s working properly. Regular testing is a simple way to make sure the device can still respond when needed.

A good habit is to test GFCI outlets monthly using the TEST and RESET buttons.

To test a GFCI:

  1. Press the TEST button.
  2. Power to the outlet should shut off.
  3. Press RESET to restore power.

If the outlet doesn’t trip when tested, won’t reset afterward, or behaves unexpectedly, have it evaluated by a qualified electrician.

When Should You Call an Electrician About a GFCI?

A GFCI that trips once may simply be responding to a temporary condition. Repeated problems, however, deserve a closer look.

Call an electrician if:

✔ The GFCI repeatedly trips after being reset
✔ The RESET button won’t stay in
✔ The outlet has no power even after resetting
✔ The TEST button doesn’t trip the device
✔ You notice heat, buzzing, burning odors, discoloration, or sparks
✔ Outdoor GFCIs frequently trip without an obvious reason
✔ Multiple outlets unexpectedly lose power
✔ You’re unsure whether areas of your home have proper GFCI protection
